Your Money Story

Oct 06, 2024

Do you know what your money story is?

I had a client who recognized that past mistakes around money were keeping her in scarcity thinking even as she took bold actions to advance her career as a business leader.  By taking charge of the story she was telling herself about money, she was able to feel more confident about her future.

What she did was:

1) Built awareness around her habitual lack and limitation patterns.

2) Forgave herself for past mistakes.

3) Reframed limited thinking to positive thinking.

This approach helps because the stories that you unconsciously repeat to yourself color your experience. When you change your internal narrative, you change your future.

The truth is everyone has a money story, even if you don’t realize it.

Let's look more closely at money and your money story. If this resonates, you can apply the three steps I share in detail in this article (the same ones my client used).

Money is an idea. It's a system of value for the exchange of goods and services that we use here on planet Earth.

How you think about money matters. And money is important. One of my personal growth teachers, Bob Proctor, said: "Money goes where it's invited".

It is essential to check your attitude about money.  Learn to tell yourself affirming money stories and take actions to welcome more money into your life.

How to uncover your money story

Reflect on what you heard about money from your parents or when you were growing up. Did you hear arguments around money, or were your parents or caregivers worried about money?  Did you hear people making judgments around money and wealth? Were you told that money "isn't important"? Unconsciously how you heard money and wealth discussed during your childhood becomes part of your belief system. Similarly, in adulthood, have you had experiences - including trauma or disappointments -  around money that impacted you?

These are habitual unconscious patterns and because money is energy, if you have limiting money stories then you are blocking the flow of money and abundance into your life.

Three steps to help you change your money story

Step #1: Start paying attention to what you tell yourself about money. Reflect on the questions above. Your subconscious mental programming is always running in the background and you may not even be aware of what you are telling yourself.

Step #2: After you've explored your money story, forgive yourself for holding on to limiting beliefs around money. Forgive yourself for mistakes you've made. Forgive anyone who may have hurt you around money. Forgiveness is important so you can consciously release negativity and move forward with an open and welcoming heart.

Step #3: Affirm to yourself that you deserve to prosper! Reframe your limited thinking around money to positive thinking.

For example, I learned how to reframe my thinking around bills from one of my favorite personal growth teachers, Louise Hay. She advices, "Love your bills." Now, when I send a cheque by mail, I write "Thank you :)" on the back of the envelope.  Similarly, when I pay a bill electroncially, I silently acknowledge the services or goods I've received when I hit the "make payment" button.

Whatever your limited thinking has been, start reframing it. By way of illustration, if you’re accustomed to saying “My compensation isn't growing," change that to, "I am taking concrete actions to provide high value and increase my compensation."

Prosperity starts inside of you

You cannot outperform your money story until you change it. If you want that higher compensation and higher net worth, start with checking your money story and creating more prosperity consciousness. It starts inside of you.
