The Importance of Personal Standards
Apr 15, 2024Have you set personal standards for yourself? And ever wonder why they matter?
If you keep reading, you'll understand why, in a world filled with endless choices and influences, having clear personal standards is crucial.
Think of your personal standards as rules that you set for yourself and follow consistently.
As Mahatma Gandhi said, "Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny."
Why do personal standards matter?
Firstly, clear personal standards provide a sense of direction and purpose, helping you stay focused on your goals and values. If you don't consciously set standards, unconsciously you might default to a lower standard than you want.
Secondly, personal standards are a a benchmark for evaluating your behavior and relationships, ensuring that you hold yourself accountable to a higher standard.
For example, one of my personal standards around family is to be fully present. In order words: no distractions like texting.
And finally, clear personal standards contribute to your higher self-confidence and self-respect, as they reflect your beliefs and priorities.
As Albert Einstein once said, "Setting an example is not the main means of influencing others, it is the only means."
What are three personal standards you plan to adhere to this week? Take the time to set clear personal standards for yourself...it's a powerful tool for shaping a meaningful and fulfilling life.
