Finding Your Purpose

Nov 06, 2023

Do you sometimes feel like you're just going through the motions? And do you ever wonder what your purpose is here on earth but you're not sure how to find it?

When I was in my twenties and thirties, I was building my career in the investment business. And I specialized in the apparel, footwear, retail and other consumer sectors. But it wasn't until I was in my forties that I started to wonder about my real purpose in life. And although my work in the investment business was rewarding and lucrative, it often felt like I was going through the motions. It didn't feel like my purpose in life.

Secretly I wished that I could magically find out!

Then in my early fifties I learned that you discover your purpose.

Mark Twain once said, "The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why."

While I don't recall the exact day I discovered my purpose, I can state with certainty that I have discovered it. Or rather, that the clarity around it unfolded for me.

"You can't connect the dots looking forward," Steve Jobs once said. "You can only connect them looking backward. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future."

My purpose is to be a teacher, and more specifically in guiding others through journeys of self-discovery, personal growth and self-mastery.

And looking back, the dots connect. I can see now that I'm hard-wired for this. This is what I love. Plus, all the diverse experiences of my life - including the victories, triumphs, as well as the humiliations and disappointments - prepared me.

How about you? What is your purpose?

Perhaps begin the discovery by asking yourself: What am I hard-wired to do? What do I love?

Stay curious. Your purpose is yours to discover!
