5 Habits of High Achievers
Sep 01, 2024What if thinking in reverse can help you move forward?
Keep reading because you are going to learn about five habits of highly-effective leaders and how thinking in reverse can help you.
And today, I am using an approach called inversion thinking.
Inversion thinking is when you consider the opposite of what you want.
I learned about inversion thinking from entrepreneur Alex Hormozi (1) who, in turn, learned it from an influential talk delivered by Charlie Munger about How to Guarantee a Life of Misery. Charlie Munger was the Vice-Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, an investor and thinker.
Using inversion thinking, we'll review the five habits of highly effective leaders from the perspective of how to be ineffective. Remember, inversion thinking is the opposite of what you want.
If you're familiar with my teaching and approach to personal and professional growth, inversion thinking probably sounds counter-intuitive. My intention is that this will be thought-provoking for you in an entirely new way.
Let's get started!
Inversion thinking: How to Be Ineffective
Habit #1: You have goals but but you neglect to review them daily and you aren't taking consistent action towards them.
Habit #2: You make decisions but then you second guess yourself. You doubt yourself. You worry if you’re making the right decision. You change your mind.
Habit #3: You blame people, situations, and circumstances outside of you when things aren't going your way.
Habit #4: You are overwhelmed by problems; you ruminate and complain about everything that is not working for you.
Habit #5: You associate with people who are stuck and complain about their problems.
Now, identify where you are at risk for being ineffective.
Then, flip this around to spotlight what you want:
How to Be Effective
Habit #1: You have goals, you review them daily and you take consistent action.
Habit #2: You make decisions promptly. You make the best decisions you can with the information you have. You follow through.
Habit #3: You take 100% responsibility for yourself and your results.
Habit #4: You focus on solutions and possibilities.
Habit #5: You surround yourself with like-minded, positive people who encourage you to grow.
Inversion thinking is powerful tool.
Inversion thinking pushes you to look at things from another perspective. Here are some of the benefits of inversion thinking:
- it puts a spotlight on behaviors that are holding you back
- it's a wake-up call to get yourself on track to the success you want
- it helps you know what can prevent your succes
Inversion thinking is recognizing your potential pitfalls. It's useful for avoiding mistakes so you can stay focused on achieving your goals!
