Why Your Mindset Matters

Feb 16, 2023

Would you like to achieve your next promotion? Or perhaps you'd like to step into higher leadership? Maybe you'd like to grow your revenues or compensation?

Whatever it may be for you, in this article you are going to learn about mindset and how a positive mindset can help you feel more ease and confidence advancing your career and life.

This  is important because many high achieving leaders like you are working hard and putting in long hours to achieve your goals. And often this journey leaves you feeling stressed and overwhelmed. It’s a theme that emerges in my conversations with accomplished individuals like you.

Defining Mindset

But first, what is mindset? Let's understand this at a basic level: your mind is an activity. It is activity of your brain. And your mindset is your predominant disposition, which reflects your habitual thinking and beliefs.

Permit me ask you a few questions so that you can check in about your mindset. Are you positive? Enthusiastic? Optimistic? Or are you negative? Apathetic? Pessimistic? Are you generally open to new ideas and learning? Or do you tend to be fixed in your ideas?

These are essential questions to ask yourself in order to gain an understanding about your mindset. Because to advance your career and life, you must  be OPEN to learning, re-imagining, adapting and growing. This is often referred to as a "growth mindset."

Three Parts of You

There are three parts to you: your body (physical), your mind (intellect), and your spirit (essence). If you're like most people, you're probably focused on the material/physical plane and identify most with your intellect and body. Sadly, most  people are out of touch with the spiritual side of themselves.

The part of you that is spirit wants to grow, to experience life more fully,  to experience your talents, and to seek fuller expression of your uniqueness. And chances are if you are feeling stressed and overwhelmed, you are out of touch with that part of you.

It might be that you were once open-minded, but disappointments and stress have caused you to shut down a little or maybe a lot. And if that’s the case, let this be a wake up call.

One of the things I’ve found with high-achievers is that you’re likely well educated, you might have professional degrees and you probably already have a high level of success. You use your your intellect A LOT, and you might feel like you already know everything.

Adopt a Positive Mindset

But the truth is, you don’t know everything. And this is one of the reasons for adopting a positive mindset. A positive mindset and open-mindedness will allow you to welcome new possibilities and better ways of doing things.

Let's say you'd like to achieve your next promotion but you were passed over for a promotion two years in a row. It's important to acknowledge the disappointment. But to advance your career, do not dwell in the disappointment.

Instead, "flip the switch" on your thinking. Be open to reframing the situation and looking at it differently. When you reframe a negative thought to a positive one, you change your point of view or perception. Perception is one of your higher faculties.

When you "flip the switch" to a positive mindset, you open yourself up to greater possibilities for learning, re-imagining and adapting to a future you want.

Earlier you were reminded that part of you is spirit. When you are in a positive mindset, you open yourself up to your intuition or internal guidance system. In a positive mindset, you are more open to hearing the whispers of your intuition in a way that a closed mind can't. Like perception, your intuition is a higher faculty that can support you in achieving your goals. Ever wonder what insights you can gain about your career advancement that your intuition can offer? Give it a try!

As personal growth pioneer Louise Hay explained: "If we want a joyous life, we must think joyous thoughts. If we want a prosperous life, we must think prosperous thoughts. If we want a loving life, we must think loving thoughts."

To experience more ease and joy in advancing your career and life, start with flipping the switch and begin training yourself from a limited mindset to a positive mindset.
